Local spring creeks are well known for producing reliable hatches and surface-feeding fish for most of the year. In Paradise Valley, just south of Livingston we fish the Armstrong Spring Creek which flows through the O' Hair and Depuy’s family ranches on the west side of the Yellowstone River. Nelson's Spring Creek is on the east side of the river, slightly south of the other creek. These properties all require a trespass fee of ($40-$125 per rod) and are limited to wade fishing with barbless hooks.
Guided fishing on the creeks is the most effective way for first-time visitors to quickly learn the creeks for self-guided adventures. Consistent temperatures and predictable hatches make the creeks an ideal choice for anglers looking for the true “match the hatch” experience. The creeks also serve as significant spawning grounds for rainbows and Browns in the Yellowstone, thus bringing new fish into the creeks in the fall and spring. The peak season is from April 15-September 15 and reservations are always required as space is limited. The most popular time is May & June on the local creeks as the Yellowstone is often not fishable during these times.
We prefer to guide the creeks during the off-season as fall and spring are beautiful times along the creeks and the fishing is generally good and less crowded. The property owners provide huts with stoves in them to offer shelter and warmth on those crisp autumn and spring days. A day or two on the creeks is a perfect way to round out a trip to southwest Montana, especially for anglers of advanced casting skills.
