The White Miller is a type of caddis that frequents the blue-ribbon rivers around the Bozeman, Montana area.
If you’re a night owl and want to try fly fishing during dark, take some of these flies with you as they only emerge and lay eggs in the middle of the night. There is a bit of overlap with dawn and dusk, however, so those times can also be good to tie these on as well. The hatch can last a long time and be very prolific.
They are commonly light cream colored and are best fished in slower water. Try size #10-#16 for the best match for this hatch. Trout most often eat the emergers and the egg layers in hook sizes #16.
This species has both a spring and fall emergence, so it is a good idea to have a few imitations in your box during these times.
Anglers fishing the lower Madison River during the weeks after the Mother’s Day Caddis hatch will encounter White Millers with regularity. Our guides watch for rising trout under overhanging Juniper tress when the White Millers are out. Fish can be very challenging when they are keyed into emerging pupa, but a successful session makes for a great guided fly fishing trip.
This hatch is of particular importance to anglers fly fishing the Firehole River during the opening weekend of fishing in Yellowstone National Park and throughout September.
