Brook Trout are a non-native Montana fly fishing game fish.

Brook Trout were introduced across Montana in the late 1800s and have been a steadfast game fish in headwater streams and alpine lakes ever since. They thrive in small, cold streams and are rarely encountered in the mainstem Montana fly fishing rivers.

Brook Trout are widely dispersed in headwater streams and mountain lakes across western Montana today. Generally under 10” in length, trophy Brook Trout up to 9 pounds have been recorded in the state.
