April Guided Fly Fishing in Bozeman

April in Bozeman is one of the more memorable times of year to be on the water for our fly fishing guides at Fins & Feathers. This is a time of transition here in Southwest Montana, as winter gives way to spring and local water conditions seem to change by the hour. It’s also the time of year when everyone at Fins & Feathers is constantly sneaking away to squeeze in a day or two of fishing before things get too hectic. Warmer weather, prolific hatches, and actively feeding trout throughout the day makes April one of our favorite months to be fly fishing in Bozeman.

Dry fly fishing during April starts with the subtle rises of backwater brown trout feeding on midges and ends with the explosive strikes of the Mother’s Day Caddis hatch. Daily hatches of Blue-Winged Olives and March Browns can be experienced just about everywhere around Bozeman on cloudy days during the month of April.

As the water temperatures increase along with the longer days and warmer weather, the fish become more active for longer periods of the day. Nymphing and streamer fishing are typically best in the early and late hours of the day until we start to see the arrival of the Mother’s Day Caddis on the lower Madison and Yellowstone rivers in early April.

Each day bring something new this time of year and it is certainly worth the effort to get out on the water now as the spring runoff is now only a few weeks away.
