Here we are, brining in the new year with the holiday festivities officially in the rearview mirror and eyes locked on what’s come for 2023. The last 2 months of 2022 brought piles and pile of snow to the northern Rockies...

...setting our watersheds up for some much-needed drought relief as we look to the Bozeman fly-fishing options in the spring and summer months. Although the timing of when all that water will make its way into the rivers is never a certainty, we are anticipating a “normal” spring runoff season with good water conditions throughout July and August.

There is no place like Bozeman when it comes to western fly-fishing during the prime months of June-September with prolific hatches, endless river choices, and stunning scenery. One can expect to find multiple species of Caddis hatching alongside Salmonflies, Golden Stones, Green Drakes, Flavs, Yellow Sallies, PMD’s and more throughout late June and early July on the Madison and Yellowstone rivers. Our fly-fishing focus shifts in the Bozeman area - along with the wild-trout of Montana -to hoppers, ants, beetles, and nocturnal stones that all become more active in late July and well into the early fall. Throw in some streamer and nymph fishing on those dog days of summer, and the flyfishing options around Bozeman should be awesome in 2023 – thanks to the snow that is keeping our ski hills in amazing shape this winter!

Regarding the summer season, I have long held the belief that the best time to get here is anytime that one can find the free time. Water conditions are always unpredictable, but we have been fly-fishing around Bozeman for over 30 years and guiding anglers here for 23 of those, so we have the expertise and experience to find some terrific flyfishing options every day during the prime, summer months. Some of the best times to look at during these months include late June (June 23 – 30), July 15-25, and August 23-30 if one can plan ahead. These recommendations are based on predicted water conditions and relatively light angling pressure when compared to the weeks in between these recommendations.
