The Upper Madison River is a premier wild trout fishery in Montana that bursts to life as winter recedes and spring arrives. For experienced anglers, March 20th - April 15 offers prime fly fishing opportunities on the river sections near Ennis. Winter’s ice recedes, midge and blue-winged olive hatches are renewed, and pre-spawn rainbow trout are on the move, feeding and aggressive.
During early spring, cold water keeps the trout concentrated in the slower, deeper runs. While "deep" is a relative term on the Madison, which is known for its fast, shallow waters, finding productive buckets and runs is key. Our Montana fishing guides specialize in locating these prime spots, particularly this time of year.
Wade fishing is the most effective method in these conditions. Our guides use drift boats to navigate from one spot to another, allowing anglers to cast streamers or relax and take in the stunning scenery between runs.
With over two decades of experience guiding fly fishing trips on the Madison, we consider this 4-week window one of the best. However, it's essential to be prepared for cold water and variable weather. Anglers should expect long hours wading in water temperatures around 40°F.
Early season fly fishing on the Madison is geared toward intermediate to advanced fly anglers who prefer wade fishing over boat fishing. While floating is the most efficient way to cover large stretches of water on many Montana rivers, the upper Madison's cold-water conditions call for a more methodical approach this time of year. Though drift boats are used to move between spots, most of the day will be spent outside the boat.
Spring weather in Montana is notoriously unpredictable, and the Madison Valley is especially windy during April and May. Anglers should come prepared for cold conditions, with warm base layers, gloves, socks, and hats being essential for staying comfortable.
Nymph fishing is the name of the game in early spring. Tandem fly rigs with split shot are ideal for targeting rainbow trout that stack up in shallow "buckets," where they find refuge from the stronger currents. These trout become increasingly active during this pre-spawn period, responding aggressively to changes in water temperature and hatches.
On a good day, experienced anglers can land 20 or more fish. However, action tends to slow by late morning or early afternoon on sunny days. Sometimes, just a couple of productive spots are all you need. Guests typically streamer fish between runs or kick back and take in the scenery.
While we provide waders and boots as needed, this time of year is best suited for experienced anglers with their own gear. Properly fitting wading gear is crucial for comfort when standing in cold water for extended periods.
Layering is key—bring warm tops and bottoms, along with essential accessories like fleece gloves, thick socks, and a beanie. We recommend the Skwala Thermo collection for both warmth and comfort on cold Montana mornings.
When it comes to tackle, fly fishing with a nymph setup—including two flies and split shot—remains the most effective technique on the Madison. We recommend a 9 ½ foot 5-weight rod for this approach. Both the G. Loomis NRX+ 595 and St. Croix EVOS 596 are excellent choices. Pair either of these rods with the RIO Extreme Indicator fly line in a 5-weight for optimal results. While our guides can provide rods and reels if needed, these are great options for those looking to invest in a dedicated setup for the trip.
