Top 10 Missouri River Flies - Early May 2023

Spring on the Missouri is “heating” up with warm weather in the cards for the next week. Expect water conditions to start changing daily with increasing snowmelt coming in from the Dearborn River and Little Prickly Pear Creek.

Increased flows will also start coming out of Holter Dam as upstream reservoirs need to make room for all that snow still in the mountains of Southwest Montana. The fishing throughout the Holter Dam to Cascade stretch of the Missouri River will be good throughout, but the angler needs to focus on reading the water as it changes daily and have a solid selection of flies as well.

Here are the core flies that I am fishing right now on the Missouri River near Craig. These are great choices right now (and every Spring) as Blue Winged Olives are now showing up and the fish have been responding by keying in on both the nymphs and hatching adults when present.

I have a few openings this May on the Missouri due to a couple of last-minute cancellations – e-mail me for availability or book online by clicking on the various booking buttons on the website. Be sure to select Specialty Trips and click on the Spring on the Missourioption.
