Bozeman Fly Fishing Guide Coleman Jones

I am originally from Charlottesville Virginia. I grew up fishing small mountain streams and smallmouth rivers in Virginia.

I attended Colorado State University and received an undergraduate in Natural Resource Tourism and a Masters in Tourism Management. After grad school I started fishing significantly more and ended moving to Montana to guide.

As well as teach snowboarding at Bridger Bowl. I am extremely passionate about teaching and educating anglers about our fisheries. I love being in the outdoors and always continuing my education of fly fishing.

Common Bozeman Fly Fishing Guide FAQ's

Favorite summertime hatch to fly fish near Bozeman:

The PMD hatches of early summer are my favorite in the Bozeman area. Steadily rising trout that are willing to eat a well-presented dry fly create the perfect opportunity for anglers to truly connect with the sport while experiencing the best of Bozeman fly fishing.

One tip to help anglers improve their casting:

Slow down that casting stroke and be sure to pause on the back cast. There's no need to try to power that cast; just slow down and let the rod do the work.

Top fly rod configuration for Bozeman fly fishing:

A nine-foot, 6-weight with a medium-fast action is my all-around fly rod preference for fly fishing in this part of Montana. It is great for nymphing and streamer fishing, but also does well in most of the dry fly fishing scenarios we encounter in the Bozeman area.

Preferred method of fly fishing during the summer:

Dry/dropper setups are my favorites for the bulk of the summer fly fishing in Montana. Both beginner and advanced anglers can learn a lot about fly presentation, covering water, and fighting fish while fishing a dry with a weighted nymph dropped a couple of feet below it.

Favorite river sections as a Bozeman Mt fly fishing guide:

The upper Madison between Palisades and MacAtee Bridge, the Yellowstone River near Emigrant, and the lower Yellowstone River near Big Timber are my 3 "go-to" river sections to guide anglers fishing near Bozeman.
