The Skwala jacket lineup is purpose-built for anglers using innovative technologies and fabric packages to create the best fly fishing gear out there today – all from a true, Bozeman fly fishing company!
Spring 2025 has brought the wettest and most unpredictable Bozeman fly fishing conditions that I can recall in the last 30 years. Very little dry fly fishing was had until late April as the water and air temperatures were stubbornly cold, delaying the typical mayfly and caddis hatches until the week before the runoff season kicked off. However, there were plenty of great days on the legendary Montana fly fishing rivers near Bozeman, spent stripping streamers and nymphing between March and early May.
I never fully appreciated or have used all of my rain jackets as much as I have in the last few months. From mild, rainy spring days to howling wind and blowing snow, the Skwala Fishing lineup of waterproof and breathable outerwear can be counted on to keep me out there and comfortable, regardless of the weather.
These three, unique rain jackets from Skwala Fishing have each seen their fair share of days on the water this spring. You can layer up under the RS or Carbon Jacket with base and insulation layers when conditions are cool to find customized comfort. Rely on the Outpost RS for those extra cold, windy days – there’s nothing out there that will keep the angler warm and dry quite like this one.
A Lightweight, performance rain jacket has been an essential part of my fly fishing kit over the last few seasons, wherever my angling travels have taken me. It’s kept me dry and warm during unexpected summer rainstorms during afternoon hopper sessions spent fishing the Madison River between Macatee and Varney. There’s been more than a few days in the tropics when it’s made those long boat rides in the wind more bearable. Always reliable and comfortable, the Carbon Rain Jacket packs down nicely so that it’s out of the way when I don’t need it, but always right there when I do.
Heavy-duty waterproof protection that’s perfect for fall and spring Montana fly fishing conditions, whether I’m knee deep swinging streamers or stalking slow-sippers on the lower Yellowstone River. The RS Jacket is feature-rich and built to be paired with the Skwala RZ Wader for use while fly fishing in the coldest, wettest times of the year when the biggest trout of the year seem to show up out of nowhere. It’s an ideal piece to wear as an outer layer on those wet, spring days that start with snow and end in drizzle! This one has been my go-to piece for the wet and wild spring of 2025 more days than not.
New for 2025, this is the warmest waterproof, breathable jacket that I’ve come across during my 25 years in the fly fishing industry. Packed with insulation and overbuilt to last, this jacket features stretch, breathability, and waterproof technology, making it the perfect choice for those who go fishing, regardless of the weather. There’s nothing more comfortable when bombing down the Missouri River near Craig, Montana, in the ol’ jet sled in early March to swing softies below Pelican. If winter steelhead, fishing midges in February, or sea run browns in Argentina are in your annual repertoire, the Outpost RS is worth adding to your gear assortment.
Skwala utilizes advanced, microporous laminate barrier technology from Toray in all of its waterproof and breathable fabric packages. Applied barriers move freely with the garment for unrestricted casting and angler mobility. The Toray Entrant laminate is among the most advanced waterproof/breathable membranes on the market today, with years of proven performance and durability in a range of products.
Skwala rain jackets are designed with functional zipper plans to simplify the “on the water” hours for every angler. Well-thought-out chest pockets are sized to hold a variety of your angling essentials that need to be close at hand, like small tools and a spare fly box. The RS family of rain jackets features dual pass-through pockets and fleece-lined hand warming pockets that the winter angler will have the winter angler asking themselves how they ever managed before. YKK Aquaguard zippers round out the zipper and pocket packages.
Nylon stretch fabrics move with the angler for unrestricted casting and comfort while navigating rugged terrain. Whether you are walking the flats with the Carbon in a tropical downpour or swinging tailouts on the OP in the Outpost RS, you will notice the comfort that comes with stretch fabrics when it actually matters most.
Designed by anglers, for anglers, the Skwala Fishing lineup of waders, boots, and apparel is “changing the game” across the fly fishing landscape. Unlike other brands that build products based on “cross-over” tech from mountaineering or ski apparel, Skwala builds and designs theirs from the ground up with only the angler in mind. Performance design, fabrics, and innovative technology set every Skwala Fishing product apart from every other brand in the space today.
I have personally owned and worn just about every breathable wader, wading boot, rain jacket, sun shirt, insulated jacket, and fishing pant from all of the major players over the last 30 years. Skwala Fishing products are available online or at most fly shops.
