Ecolodge Da Barra

Brazil Peacock Bass Fishing: Ecolodge Da Barra

Ecolodge Da Barra is located at the meeting point of the Teles Pires and Juruena Rivers, where the Tapajós River begins. This area sits at the border of the Brazilian states of Amazonas, Mato Grosso, and Pará. The lodge is accessible via a 2 ½ hour charter flight from Manaus to a remote private landing strip along the river.

Lodge Overview

This unique floating lodge has 16 air-conditioned guest rooms, each with a private bathroom and a view of the river. The lodge offers modern amenities, including internet (via Starlink), daily laundry service, hot pressurized showers, a restaurant, an open bar, and a floating deck. Meals are buffet-style and include local fruits, vegetables, fish, and meats.

A Diverse Fly Fishing Experience

The lodge gives access to several rivers—Tapajós, Juruena, Teles Pires—and their tributaries, such as the Bararati and Aximari. Anglers also fish in more than 100 nearby lakes and lagoons. The region is home to well over 20 species of game fish. Here are the primary species targeted by fly anglers.

- Peacock bass: fast, aggressive fish, often targeted in shallow water.

- Arowana: surface feeders that can be caught with floating flies.

- Bicuda: long-bodied, predatory fish with sharp teeth.

- Pacu: omnivorous and strong fighters.

- Payara: also known as “vampire fish,” recognized for their large teeth and powerful strikes.

These species offer various techniques and approaches, from poppers to baitfish patterns. The clear water fishery is a stark contrast to the rivers of the Rio Negro system like the Rio Marie. Another clear water fishery that I have fished - the Iriri River at Kendjam - is a more intimate-sized fishery with diverse angling geared towards the walk-and-wade angler.

The Surrounding Environment

The lodge is located in a remote part of the Amazon with clear-water rivers thanks to the granite riverbed. The area includes white-sand bars, rocky shoreline, and jungle forest. Wildlife sightings may include birds like macaws and parrots, as well as animals such as caimans, otters, and, occasionally, jaguars. The landscape offers both boat and wading fishing opportunities depending on water levels.

A Unique Jungle Fishery

Ecolodge Da Barra is a well-equipped base for anglers looking to explore fly fishing in the Amazon. Its remote location, modern accommodations, and access to a wide variety of game fish make it a good choice for those seeking a structured and comfortable fishing experience in a wilderness setting. With year-round fishing and charter service from Manaus included in most packages, the lodge offers convenience alongside productive waters. The fly angler should try to target this location during the dry season between September and January.
