Rio Marie : 2015

Fly Fishing for Peacock Bass : 2015 at Rio Marie

Ever since my pre-teen days spent lurking the plastic worm and spinner bait filled aisles at Fishin’ World in Dallas, fishing – bass fishing in particular – has taken up as much of my brain as cigarettes, sowbugs, and Waylon Jennings. I remember seeing this one ol’ fish mount on the wall, though, that was different – bigger, more colorful, with irreverent, dark red eyes.

I didn’t know what it was, but I knew I wanted to know what that critter was all about – unfortunately, I soon learned that those guys aren't from Alabama, but hidden deep in the Amazon Jungle - about 3500 miles away from my 3rd grade desk in Dallas. Way too far for me to pedal to on my Mongoose – even if I got up early on a Saturday.

Fast forward about 37 years and there I stood on a riverbank of white sand in the absolute middle of nowhere staring at stars that looked as if they had never seen light. My mind swirled with memories of that red-eyed monster on the wall of the old fishing store in the background as I replayed my first encounter with a 20 plus pound Brazil peacock bass earlier that day on the Turi River. They are mean, hungry, and don’t shy away from a poorly presented hunk 6” hunk of rattling deer hair slathered in silicone. Sure, it can be pretty hot, bees can be annoying, and you might cast about 15 miles of fly line any given day – but it’s fun as hell!

My first introduction to peacock bass fishing was back in 2015 on the Rio Marie in northwest Brazil. Untamed Angling continues to run a world class fly fishing destination there today and we will be hitting it once again in late 2025.
