Current Conditions

Fishing around Bozeman has been good over the recent stretch of warmer weather. Cold mornings are still typical, but late morning into the afternoon has been the most productive window on most rivers. Water clarity is generally good and flows are stable for this time of year. Nymphing continues to be the method catching the most fish across the region.

The Gallatin River is fishing well. Recent warm days have stirred a bit of color, but the river remains clear enough to fish. Nymph rigs with rubberlegs, stonefly patterns, zebra midges, and slim perdigons are getting the majority of fish. Fish are sitting deeper, so focus on water with steady current. Streamer fishing can still produce a few fish on warm afternoons.

The Lower Madison River is fishable and has been a solid choice. Zirdles, smaller crayfish patterns, worms, zebra midges, and slim perdigons are all working when fished near the bottom. Spending time in deeper water with a steady push is where most fish have shown up. Streamers have been worthwhile on warmer days.

The Upper Madison River is clear and accessible. Rubberlegs, small stoneflies, zebra midges, and perdigons are catching fish deep in slower current. A later start has been helpful as the day warms. Streamer action is possible on the warmer afternoons, mainly with smaller sculpin-style flies.

The Yellowstone River is fishing in many stretches despite some early ice along the banks. Nymphs like stonefly patterns, zebra midges, and slim perdigons have been producing in deeper water. Fish are holding where the current softens. Streamer fishing can produce on milder days. Dry-fly activity has been limited.
