Depuy's Spring Creek

Current Conditions

Depuy’s Spring Creek continues to be a good winter option and has been fishing consistently despite the cold. The spring water has kept conditions stable, with open water throughout and very little ice along the banks. Wind has still been a factor, but the creek has offered some shelter compared to the larger rivers. Late morning into the afternoon has been the most reliable time to fish.

Nymphing has been the best way to find fish. Scuds and small midge patterns have been the most dependable, along with subtle pheasant tails and similar mayfly nymphs. A longer leader helps here—a 9-foot leader of 4X or 5X fluorocarbon has worked well in the clear water. Keeping presentations clean and controlled has mattered more than changing flies.

Fish have been holding in the deeper runs where the current stays even. Slowing down and spending time in those areas has been far more effective than moving quickly or focusing on shallow water.

There have been a few surface looks during the warmest part of the day. Midges are the main bug right now, and while it’s not consistent, having a couple small emergers or dries in sizes 20–22 can pay off if fish start showing themselves.

Streamer fishing hasn’t played much of a role on the creek lately.

Overall, Depuy’s Spring Creek remains one of the better winter choices when conditions on the rivers are tough. A later start, a simple nymph setup, and a careful approach have been the most reliable way to fish it right now.
