The weather cools a bit this weekend with snow and rain in the forecast on Montana’s Depuy’s Spring Creek. However this weather is a recipe for some pretty awesome dry fly action. The cloud cover should get fish up on Midges and the early stages of Blue Wing Olives. Nymphing has also been solid lately.
If you run into some fish rising try fishing a Peacock Cluster, Top Secret Midge, or a Griffiths Gnat. Really take it slow and watch the fish as you can usually tell what they're eating. If the eats are more splashy and you can't quite make out what they are eating, it's likely Midges. If you see them slowly sipping a taller looking bug of the water that is likely a Blue Wing Olive. For Blue Wings a Sparkle Dun or a Parachute Adams Should trick some fish. We have been using a 12 foot 5x leader for most of our dry fly fishing.
For your nymph rig try setting up a tandem nymph set up. A red worm or large bead dark Perdigon make great top flys. Below that try a Zebra Midge, Micro May, Pheasant Tail, or an even smaller Perdigon. The deeper holes have been holding the most fish but we are starting to pick them up in the riffles as well.
