Depuy's Spring Creek

Current Conditions

DePuy’s Spring Creek has been fishing well as we roll into September, but it’s still every bit the technical creek it’s known for. The trico spinner falls are hanging on, and fish are tricky. They’re not easy, long leaders, light tippet, and dead-drift presentations are a must. Make the first cast count, because once you line them, they’re done.

Nymphing has been productive with a sowbug or scud paired with a tiny midge or baetis pattern in the midafternoons. Look for fish tucked into riffle corners and deeper slots where they slide once the light gets higher.

Afternoons are slower, but a few fish will move for terrestrials. Ants and beetles along grassy edges can surprise you. They’re not consistent producers here like they are on the freestone, but they’re worth trying when the creek feels quiet.

Evenings sometimes bring a caddis pop, especially on the warmer nights. Trout will move back into the riffles as the sun drops, and a small tan or black caddis can make for a nice finish to the day. It’s not every evening, but when it happens it can be a fun bonus round.

Overall, DePuy’s is fishing the way it should this time of year, technical, rewarding, and humbling all at once. If you slow down, stay patient, and focus on clean drifts, you’ll find plenty of opportunities. It’s not the place for shortcuts, but that’s what makes it such a special creek to fish in September.
