October 11, 2023 Upper Madison Fishing Report

Finally, we are back to some great conditions for Montana fly-fishing in the fall! The last few days have been unseasonably warm with some heavy winds as well.
The stretches of the Madison River near Ennis have been where our Bozeman fly fishing guides have been focusing their attention the last two weeks. The best fishing is between 8-Mile Fishing Access Site and the mouth of the river at Ennis Lake.
Nymphing the deep buckets and fast water, below shallow drop-offs with tandem nymph rigs like a San Juan Worm followed by a Midge larvae or Perdigon-Style nymph has been the most productive. Fins are starting to eat egg patterns pretty well too, we have been using Firebead Sowbug with good success, early in the days.
The streamer fishing was pretty slow the last few days, but it should be good the rest of the week, now that we have some consistent cloud cover.
