Bighorn River Fly Fishing Overview

The Bighorn River is a world-class trout fishery located in the south-central portion of the Treasure State. Its Montana origins are near the small town of Ft. Smith where the river flows out of Yellowtail Dam before snaking its way to the Yellowstone River nearly 90 miles to the east.

This year-round Montana angling destination boasts some of the states most dense populations of wild trout. Rainbow and brown trout routinely reach sizes more than 20 inches.

Anglers of all skill levels can expect success on guided fly fishing trips on the Bighorn River during the spring and summer. Late summer and the fall can be challenging as aquatic vegetation takes over the popular, upper river stretches. Still the river is a remarkable trout fishery where nymph, dry, and streamer fly fishing are all equally effective at times.
