Missoula Fly Fishing In August

August Fly Fishing in Missoula

If you want to plan a Montana fly fishing trip in August, Missoula is not the place to start, as warm water temperatures and hoot owl restrictions have become the norm rather than the exception.

Look to Bozeman or the Bighorn River if an August Montana fly fishing trip is in the cards. That said, there is some decent fly fishing to be found in the Missoula area during August – but being flexible is key.

August Highlights

  • Spruce moths are prevalent along forested sections of the lower Clark Fork and throughout the Blackfoot River drainage
  • Trico hatches take off on the Bitterroot and lower Clark Fork rivers, making for some nice morning dry fly fishing when conditions are hot and still.
