Missoula Fly Fishing In September

Missoula Fly Fishing in September

Early fall is a special time for experienced anglers flyfishing in Montana in the Missoula area as water temperatures cool and hatches reignite. The crowds of June and July are long gone on the western Montana rivers by Autumn.

A few of our Bozeman fly fishing guides hit the Missoula waters this time of year with longtime clients for a change of pace. Focusing our attentions on the lower Clark Fork and Blackfoot rivers, we stick to dry fly fishing and long floats.

September Highlights

  • Hecuba hatches are one of the “sleeper” dry fly events of the year in Montana and the Missoula area rivers are the best in the state for these oversized mayflies.
  • September cold fronts can turn the hatches off in an instant! Get out the streamer rods and sink tip lines when the skies turn dark and the thermometer dips below freezing at night.
